TAI CHI CHUAN

- A HEALTHY BODY AND TRANQUIL MIND -

Tai Chi Chuan: Is a Chinese martial art and fitness regime in which you make slow, controlled movements using the Taoist principles of Yin and Yang to develop a healthy body and tranquil mind.

WHAT IS TAI CHI CHUAN?

Tai Chi Chuan (usually just shortened to Tai Chi) is a holistic system seeking to use internal energy Qi (chi) for good health, self-development and even self-defence. Tai Chi can be practised on many levels, from a simple "meditative" exercise to a realistic martial art. Characterised by its slow, continuous movements, Tai Chi is excellent for posture and improving joint mobility, strengthening the immune system and improving balance and co-ordination.

Tai Chi is a low-impact, slow-motion exercise combining deep breathing and relaxation with flowing movements. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention on your bodily sensations. It differs from other types of exercise in several respects:

  • The movements are usually circular and never forced,
  • The muscles are relaxed rather than tensed,
  • The joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched.

Originally developed as a martial art in 13th century China, today Tai Chi is practised throughout the world as a health-promoting exercise.

HOW CAN TAI CHI HELP ME?

Tai Chi is renowned as a stress-buster - it's a great way to harmonise the mind, body and spirit, to rebuild core mental and physical strength and to learn a strong centred approach to life. For those of us busy with the daily pressures of a complex and demanding life, regular practice will create the balance, strength and robustness required to enjoy the moment and relax.

  • Tai Chi can improve both lower-body strength and upper-body strength. Regular practice strengthens both the lower and upper extremities and also the core muscles of the back and abdomen.
  • Research has shown that Tai Chi practice improves balance, strength and flexibility, and is good for your heart, your breathing and immune function.
  • Tai Chi can reduce blood pressure, increase bone density, increase strength and range of motion in joints, improve many muscle and joint disorders, aid recovery from injury and lighten your mood.
  • Research suggests that Tai Chi can reduce the risk of falls among older adults who are at increased risk.
  • Tai Chi is for EVERYONE - it is suitable for ALL ages, abilities and levels of fitness and is ideal for inactive older people wanting to raise their activity levels gently and gradually.
